Autumn Equinox is a powerful time for magick, it’s an ideal way to prepare for the dark months of winter by focusing your will on bringing your wishes to fruition.

The time of late harvest, when day and night are almost exactly equally length. The beginning of Fall, and the slow descent into dark nights and short days, culminating in the Winter Solstice on December 21st.

Autumn Equinox is not a time of joyful celebration, dancing and expectant optimism, as is Spring Equinox. It’s a time for gathering in the fruits of the summer, for taking stock, and for making plans to ensure you are provided for during winter.

Like Spring Equinox, Autumn Equinox demonstrates the astronomical forces that keep our Earth warm and lit, as the sun and Earth move around each other.

Even though Autumn Equinox marks the moving into cold and dark days, it is not necessarily a time for mourning. It is also a time for inspiration; that unique feeling you get when the intense heat of summer begins to contain a hint of chill… and somehow you feel enlivened, like possibilities can be realized, despite the increasing cold.

Thus, even on the road to winter, the waning of the year, you can draw on that deep inner inspiration, to realize many of your hopes and dreams.

For within the darkness is light…

Even in the driving snow and stinging hail lies the promise of pure determination and focus; not fiery will, but the staunch, determined will of ice, the unstoppable force.

At late harvest time, I always create a magickal working centered around the realization of wishes through winter. I do the working under the light of the moon at the Autumn Equinox.

This year is no exception…

On September 22nd I perform a ceremony for selected clients that involves creating a “sigil wand” talisman and charging it under the waxing moon at the Autumn Equinox. I hand-carve the talismans using my old gypsy knife, whittling out the ideograms whilst in a vision trance, drawing down the atavistic powers at my ritual area out in the countryside in Eastern England.

It is a ceremony with echoes in the long-distant past, when the god-magicians of what are now the arctic wastes, lived in a land of harmony, warmth, and lush hills and meadows; and knew the secrets of nature herself, the goddess of earth and soil, and the mysterious straight lines that criss-crossed the archaic landscape.
