Poker is a hugely popular card game with massive, big money, tournaments online and offline. Yet just about no-one seems to be aware that poker was originally a form of divination, originating in Africa, rather than a card game.
Professor Crow – the renegade hoodooist – has close connections with Africa and through his researches into traditional African spirituality discovered the origin of poker. This is what he says on the subject:
Well, Doc, as you know, poker was actually a form of divination. It came to the States way back with those poor slave boys from Africa. That’s why poker has always been more popular in the US than the UK.
It was originally five cards that were used for divination. These five cards represented (1) the past, (2) the present, (3) the environment, (4) the advice, and the most important card was, of course, (5) the future.
Now the strange oddity about this African form of divination with cards was that spectators would place bets on the outcome of the reading. What card would the future card be? What kind of hand would be dealt? And so on.
From these beginnings the game of poker originated. Oh and “poker” was originally an East African word for “future.”
