There is a mountain very high and bare...whereon it is given out that witches hold their dance on Walpurgis Night.
Jacob Grimm, 1883.
On Walpurgis Night (April 30th), in medieval times, the witches of old would fly in spirit, on "broomsticks", to Brocken mountain in Germany to conduct their Sabbat, meet with the Devil, and dance in ritualistic ecstasy. It was an archaic shamanic practice that allowed them to ward off evil and induce greater supernatural powers... and not least (for the times) bring about good crops and abundance.
Echoing this practice I conduct a working that channels the spirit of a local medieval witch, who would have joined her sister witches at the Broken Sabbat.
Thus your intentions for this working might include:
- Increased psychic abilities.
- Protection from evil.
- Enhanced luck and good fortune.
- Up-tick in money and finances.
- Worldly wants catered for.
Walpurgis Night is the eve of May 1st, which marks the transition point between winter and spring. It is a time of hope, mixed with the expectation of abundance and all things good.
This is why I like to do a major ritual on Walpurgis Night. It holds much power to bring your needs and desires into material reality.
The Location
In the tradition of the Witches of Brocken, I conduct this working every year on the night of April 30th.
This year is no exception.
I plan to head over to a village called Icklingham, West Suffolk, to an old country path close to the (now disused) Church of All Saints, which dates back to the 12th century.
The village of Icklingham is named after the Celtic Iceni tribe, whose famous queen was Boudicca, who lived in the region. To me this suggests that the ghostly witch may be a shade from those times.

Witchcraft
Icklingham is a place where stories abound of witchcraft.
There are numerous reports of people walking there at dusk and being confronted by the ghostly form of a witch — accompanied by her familiar, a white rabbit.
Horses typically spook and some stories have it that men have dropped stone dead after an encounter with the witch and her familiar.
How It Works
As dusk falls I enter visionary and set about channelling the witch. On making contact, an eerie silence falls. No birdsong. No breeze. No rustling of hedgerow. Eventually I feel the ominous presence of the witch and her familiar, making out their shadowy shapes.
She might spook most who encounter her, but she knows when she is dealing with anybody of the "Devil's Party" (to paraphrase what was said of William Blake) and will willingly help out.
At this point, I offer your petition to the Witch
Help our dear friend, who needs a leg up in difficult times, to attain their heart felt wishes - proffer your help as you did for people of your time.
Once done I leave an offering of three old silver sixpences — crossing the witch's palm with silver.
